The martian hydrosphere/cryosphere system: Implications of the absence of hydrologic activity at Lyot crater

چکیده

[1] The Amazonian-aged 215 km-diameter Lyot crater represents a transient ’drill-hole’ into the martian hydrosphere/cryosphere system. Cratering mechanics predict that the event should have penetrated the cryosphere and released groundwater held under artesian conditions. A plausible explanation for the lack of evidence for hydrologic activity within Lyot is an absence of abundant subsurface groundwater in the region at the time of impact.

Evidence for stabilization of the ice-cemented cryosphere in earlier martian history: Implications for the current abundance of groundwater at depth on Mars

The present-day martian mean annual surface temperature is well below freezing at all latitudes; this produces a near-surface portion of the crust that is below the freezing point of water for > 2 consecutive years (defined as permafrost). This permafrost layer (i.e., the cryosphere) is a few to tens of km thick depending on latitude. Below the base of the permafrost (i.e., the cryosphere), gro...

The Martian hydrologic system: Multiple recharge centers at large volcanic provinces and the contribution of snowmelt to outflow channel activity

Global recharge of the martian hydrologic system has traditionally been viewed as occurring through basal melting of the south polar cap. We conclude that regional recharge of a groundwater system at the large volcanic provinces, Elysium and Tharsis, is also very plausible and has several advantages over a south polar recharge source in providing a more direct, efficient supply of water to the ...

Elysium-Utopia flows as mega-lahars: A model of dike intrusion, cryosphere cracking, and water-sediment release

[1] High-resolution altimetry from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) provides new data to test the interpretation that unusual flow-like deposits in Elysium-Utopia were emplaced as lahars (mass flows fluidized by water that are induced by volcanism). Using several data products derived from MOLA altimetry, we confirm that two major types of terrain dominate the region: (1) lava flows and ...

Extensive Amazonian-aged fluvial channels on Mars: Evaluating the role of Lyot crater in their formation

Widespread Amazonian-aged fluvial channels have been mapped proximal to Lyot crater, a ~225 km diameter impact basin in the northern lowlands of Mars. Comparable in area to some Noachian/Hesperian fluvial systems, their morphology differs, being dominated by broad, shallow braided channels. Using new developments in the study of cratering, water inventory, and climate history, we assess eight d...

A New Model of the Hydrologic Properties of the Martian Crust and Implications for the Formation of Valley Networks and Outflow Channels

Introduction: There is abundant geomorphic evidence for the importance of groundwater in the Martian hydrologic cycle. It appears likely that the valley networks formed as a result of groundwater sapping [1], and it is clear that the outflow channels are the manifestation of large-scale eruptions of groundwater to the surface [2]. Thus, our understanding of the formation of these features is on...
